Purpose: To share statistical data and other information on adopted/foster care children and adolescents with fellow school psychologists, with regard to representativeness, demographics, and trends; to study psychological issues in adoption and foster care pertaining to such unique stressors as loss, identity, safety, genealogical bewilderment, rejection, guilt/shame, grief, intimacy, ambiguity, and mastery/control; to discuss incidences of psychopathology, resiliency, and adaptability within this student population and their effects on learning and social competency; to explore adoptee and foster child outcomes through literature review and specific case studies; to increase awareness in the field of school psychology as to the unique challenges and strengths within this student population; and to develop greater service delivery options to this student population and their families.
