In response to Mr. Staffnik's question as to whether we should talk to parents about getting past the notion that kids belong to parents and that kids actually belong to a community is not something that I would ever support.  Talking about "collective" ownership sounds like communism to me.  Schools, these days, do so much already, but children do belong to their parents and parents need to take responsibility for their children.
